my 2 cylinder Yanmar has eaten 2 foam air cleaner elements! Am I the only one that this has happened to. The engine runs fine? What causes this?

Bad foam rubber in the 'filter'
..... and guess where all that dried out foam went? The foam air 'filters' on Yanmars are a joke at best, and are used more as an acoustic silencer than a 'filter'. Better to do a 'retrofit' large resinated paper type filter from an automotive shop specializing in racing equipment, (or salvage/junk yard). BTW... even in the middle of the ocean, ambient air is loaded with fine particulate; hence, the need for a proper *air* filter. Select the LARGEST surface area filter you can fit on.

well the element foam just got sucked down the airintake, and out the exhaust, get a proper filter , one made by that company owned by Cummins, cant memeber the name, not donaldson, not racor, um er,fleetguard that is it memeber your diesel sucks immense vacuum into the air manifold, try holding your hand there, pull your skin off, so whats the use of a bit of foam!! Ring the engine co, give em an earful!!

missing part?
Karl, Does your air cleaner have the conical stainless steel grating which supports the foam and keeps it from getting sucked into the engine? Just an idea, but if the stainless grating (sheet metal with stamped holes) were missing, that might cause the problem you're descibing. Our new 2GM30F has this type of air filter: namely, a cut-off cone of stainless stell with a foam rubber filter on top.
