I have just aquired a 1982 27' Hunter with a 8hp Yanmar diesel. the engine is orginal and is absolute great condition. Fresh water only and the owner for the last 18 years was an engineer with a passion for maintenance. No oil anywhere...clean and shines... My question is how do you start this thing cold? I tried once...turned it over for about 5 minutes and nothing would fire... a little starter fluid in the air intake and it fires off. general directions would be appriciated. And is there a secret fuel valve? email me at ormenlange@directvinternet.com

Start with Torresen.

If you would rather DIY than pay a Yanmar mechanic try Torresen(Related Link). Click on "Discussion Forums" and I think you will find lots of 8hp stuff. I didn't think it got cold where you are. My 2QM20 starts right away(when it turns over) whenever I sail. But I wouldn't be sailing if the air temp was less than 50. So are you talking colder than that? Above 50 you should not have that problem.

Air somehow

I don't know if air somehow got into the system but I would make sure by bleeding system. The only time my Yanmar 3GMF won't start is if air has gotten into the system(which is extremely rare except when you can filter, etc). Otherwise it starts the first turnover regardless of temp.

does it keep running?

If the fluid makes it fire and then it dies off, you probably do have a fuel issue. Yanmar suggests using a little gas for cold starts, but they are talking solid water cold. My yse 12 one lunger might have a valve somewhere in the feed, but I don't remember for sure. Start at the engine and work backwards to the pump, the filter and the tank, checking for a closed valve. If you're open all the way then unhitch the fuel hose at the engine, stick it in a bucket and see if turning on the ignition gets you a steady stream of diesel. If not you have to clear an obstruction or fix an air leak upstream of the 12v fuel pump. If so then like the other poster said, bleed the air from the injector pump then the injector feed tube until you get solid fuel at the injector when you turn it over. Hitch the injector feed tube back up and you should be all set. good luck

ON MY H28 I HAD TO ALWAYS GIVE MY 2GM...

three quarters to full throttle before starting to crank when cold (per Yanmar service manual). It would always start after turning over six to ten times. Once it would begin to fire I would reduce throttle slowly to around idle to avoid over reving. When warm it always fired on the first turn over. No glow plugs on it. Cranking the engine for five minutes without resting the starter will easily burn it up. Yanmar recommends thirty seconds max, then letting the starter motor cool for a few minutes before trying again. Regards, Terry

I have the same engine

I have the same engine. The instructions that I have been following when it is cold out has been to advance the throttle to half or 3/4 and start the engine. Once the engine starts, bring the throttle back to idle. I generally don't have to crank any more than 10-15 seconds.

Cold starting

Had the same question with my yanmar. Torresen suggested pulling the fuel cut off switch out and cranking the engine for 5 seconds twice. Push fuel cut off switch in, adjust throttle to 3/4 and it starts right up. Also, make sure you are in neutral.
