Does anyone know what the oil pressure gague should read with the engine(4JH4E) running? I've owned the boat since new and was always troubled by the fact that the gague only reads about 1/8 inch off of the bottom peg which I recall is about 15 PSI with the engine running. The pressure is obviously high enough to clear the low oil pressure alarm but I am not sure that I would be able to recognize a low pressure condition should it start to develop. I suspect that the pressure is probably fine and I have a faulty sending unit or gague. Also where is the sending unit on the engine?

Thanks
Marc

Not it your engine manual?
4JH3 Service manual states oil pump pressure at 3,600 engine rpm is
3Kgf/cm² = 43psi. Relief valve setting 12Kgf/cm² = 171psi.
I would expect the 4JH4 to be very similar.
Suggest you try another oil gauge or sender before tearing the engine apart. And make sure the oil is oil rather than water!

you also need to observe the oil pressure at varying RPMs. 15 PSI at idle with a hot engine does not seem problematic for an engine with some age and lower viscosity oil.

It's a systemic problem. Attitude Adjustment 2 had an engine survey when she had about 400 hours on her eleven years ago. She has 2300 now. The oil pressure gauge was unhooked when I bought her. Pre-sale, I had an engine survey. He noted the non-working gauge and tested the oil pressure. He found it to me normal. After I got the boat, I purchased a new sending unit, However, it registered very low. So, sometime later, I got a new gauge. It still registered low. So, later yet, I got another sending unit, and it was defective out of the box. When I got a new one, nothing changed. Being concerned, I got a manual gauge and checked it. Yup, it was fine. So, I asked a Yanmar rep at a boat show, since the sending units and gauge were $100 a copy. He said go to a John Deer dealer. Well, I just sort of ignored it for a while and then tried some non-Yanmar sending units. Well, that was a disaster since the threads are not close to any standard here. I think they are metric NPT. Anyhow, I found an Izusu diesel sending unit had the same threads and got one, but it read in reverse. At this time, I just motor away and don't worry about it since the low pressure alarm works fine. The gauge just works as a go-no go idiot light. One day, I will have a different brass coupling made up and replace both the gauge and sending unit. Bottom line: I would have it tested with a mechanical gauge and WATCH it happen or do it yourself before worrying!

BTW....

...I found from some research that this is a common issue with these engines.

You guys do know that the oil sender is a variable resistor right?
SO if the gage is reading low but a manual check of the oil pressure says it is OK ....
Let’s see the only other place is the wiring loom. Not that Hunter has ever had any problems with their engine wire loom connectors (all 12 of them).

My recommendation would be to take an ohm meter and some long probe extension wires and check what the resistance is from sender to gage. It should be very close to 0 ohms. I suspect when you find the offending connector and correct all the corroded terminals in it other minor problems (starter, coolant temp....) will also go away.
That was my experience. I have given up keeping the connectors clean and just cut them out and soldered the wires. Made a big improvement in oil pressure, water temp, and the engine now starts every time.

Could be, Bill. I did run a lead directly to the gauge, but it still could be the ground. Good point.

We're on our 4th sending unit. They seem to last for 2 or 3 years, then start reading low. Our guage being Japanese, reads Kg/cm2. At 2900 RPM's, it usually is at 4 (12 o'clock on the guage). As the engine is running for a while, it lowers some, but stays in the lower green area of the guage.

When the oil pressure starts reading consistantly lower than the guage's green area, I put in a new sending unit.
