hi we have just commissioned a Catalina 310 fitted with the newish Yanmar 3YM30 which has just had its 50 hour service overall things have gone well with one exception - the engine overheats when it is run at full throttle for more than a couple of minutes. the local Yanmar dealer has been a little coy about what could be the problem and has not yet signed off the warranty one engineer i spoke to said he had heard that there were some issues with the heat exchangers with this engine. has anyone had a similar experience and/or can propose a solution? thanks and regards brian m

Look to the prop.

The boat may be over propped. Check that it is in spec. Making a diesel engine work too hard will cause it to overheat. Jim

Same Problem

I had the EXACT same problem with my 2005 H36! Same engine. If I went over 2600 rpm's for more than 10 minutes, the engine would overheat. The dealer was of no help so I called the local Yanmar dealer. They have seen a lot of these 3YM30's come from the factory with shipping grease still in the heat exchanger. That and/or the wrong mixture of anti-freeze. Mine had both issues. The Yanmar service center cleaned the heat exchanger fins and the problem is solved. No charge to me. Press them on this, Yanmar is aware of this but doesn't "publish" it. They'll fix it at no charge. Jack

many thanks Frederick great site which coincidently was started by a fellow kiwi (NZer) anyway the site revealed that there is an issue with some of these engines which can be solved by cleaning or replacing the heat exchangers kind regards brian m

follow-up

thanks for the various replies the local Yanmar agent has now agreed to examine the engine with a view to establishing the cause and propose a fix Nick, agree this does not put Yanmar in a very good light - why should the owner have to play Sherlock Holmes when it is clearly a Yanmar problem! when the overheating problem is resolved i will add another post which may assist someone else in this situation regards
