I have read that the yanmar 3jh2e will not pick up oil properly beyond 17 degrees heal. Does anyone know if this is true? Does it apply to both port and starboard tack? Is there a mod that fixes this?

Yes it is true. the good news is that if the wind is strong enough to heel the boat to 17 degrees then you don't even need the engine.......
The mod that I would use is to put up the sails. It will probably drive the boat faster than the motor with those wind strengths too.
