yanmar 3gm/3ym in hunter 30

i have a ysm-12 and ready to repower the ole gal. I know that a new 2ym15 will fit but i have a chance to pick up a 3 cyclinder yanmar from a boat abt 3 yrs old.

just wondering abt the foot print difference.

Charles,

A fellow Hunter 30 owner in my marina replaced his ysm12 with 3ym30. There is plenty of room for this engine. He had a few problems with the installation. The installer didn't align the shaft correctly so bent his new shaft. This required having someone else re-fit the engine and replace the shaft. After his issues he is very satisfied with the increase in power. I also have a hunter 30 79' but will be keeping my YSM12 for a few more years ($13K) a little to much to put into a $14k boat. My wife has said if I am going to spend that kind of money get a larger newer boat, so who am I to disagree. So looking for different boat over the next two years. I think you will be happy with the repower, that boat always needed more power considering the YSM12 is only a 10hp engine. Good luck with the repower and pick a very good installer it make all the difference.

The 3YM30 is. . .

very small and light(Related Link). I installed mine myself to the tune of $8000. including custom made mounts, shaft, etc.(but not the new prop). There are three more related Photo Forum items, search on "schenck". I am unfamiliar with the 3GM series.

3 yrs old?

If its a 2005 3YM30, check the serial number. Yanmar had problems with these overheating and have replaced the heat exchanger on those that complained.
Engines with serial no. E05566 and beyond had the new larger heat exchanger.
If not, you might check with the PO if he had this done, unless this from a salvage boat?

Otherwise it's been a good engine on our 33. I can get 6.5 - 7 knots at 2800 - 3000 RPM on a 10,000 lb. boat.

1979 repower

Thanks for all the replies and encouragement. I went ahead and purchased the engine for $1000.00 " 3GM20MF ". came with all cables/controls, etc. Turns over freely by hand and has no signs of being submerged. Aparently came out of boat with fire damage and insurance totaled the boat.

Problems, and then some...

I have a 2005 Hunter 33 I bought new. I also had the overheating issue (on the 29hp Yanmar (3YM30) which was solved by replacing the cooling bundle - under warranty by Yanmar, that was in 2006. I now have about 447 hours on the engine (I use my boat alot) and just had to spend $7.5K to rebuild a 3.5 year old engine. Why? Apparently the cast iron exhaust elbow clogged up with carbon/soot, and caused back pressure which put carbon in the oil and turned it into grinding paste rather than a lubricant. Still trying to get it out of the dealers service rep how that could happen. Has anybody else had this type of problem? I thought Yanmar engines were pretty much indestructable (basically a quote from the Boat US insurance assessor when he heard about my issue). Needless to say, it's not covered by insurance - hopefully Yanmar will stand by their product when I call them in the next week or so to share the news!

The 3GM30F is a great little engine. I've got at least 1,600 hours on mine (engine hour meter isn't original eq) and it runs smooth and reliable (as long as the fuel is clean!). Finally got around to installing the starter solenoid relay bypass and now it kicks over at the touch of the starter button. Uses less than a half gallon an hour at cruise RPM (2,800)--at $4.50 a gallon now that's fine with me!
