OK......here's the latest, rebuilt Perko 493 sea strainer, new hoses to seacock.... no problem. Heat exchanger great water flow, new raw water impeller. Thermostat opened up in a hot pan of water (they either work or they don't...right??).......This leaves me two things, elbow and the closed loop impeller. I know I probably should of tackled the elbow first.....but wanted to rule out all others first. Any way to check mixing elbow without taking it off?? I know I could take it off and band saw it like the pic Ralph posted....but if it was good??

If it's the original, then it is most likely bad. I don't think you want to cut it out. In my case, if I had done that, I wouldn't have been able to re-use it. Here is how I got mine off w/o cutting.

1) Remove s/s bands (obvious)
2) Take a heat gun and soften it up all around
3) Take a flat s/s putty knife (not wide), and try to stick it in. If not, use a small screwdriver and gently hammer it in enough (like 1") to open it up.
4) Spray WD-40 in the crevase
5) Repeat #3-#4 and go all the the way around after moving 1/2 inch
6) Heat it up again and try to twist it (manually), or use a oil filter strap wrench.

It was tricky, but it eventually came out. Good luck!

The sectioning was done just to pass the long winter nights up here. Once you get the elbow out, just look inside to check the gas/water passage for blockage. You can try cleaning it but the carbon is just on the verge of turning to diamond (or so it feels).

Well I went thru the entire cooling system.......while cleaning out the coolant overflow tank I noticed a little oily residue.....then I smelt the underside of the radiator cap, and it smelt like exhaust. ........ finally found out the problem, Blown Head gasket. Thanks to all again. KC.
