I have a 2 cyl. yanmar that smokes alot at startup - here are the symptoms - the # 2 cyclinder fires up pretty fast but the #1 cyclinder takes about 30 seconds to fire - the net result - a cloud of smoke .... once it starts it runs great - no smoke and purs right along.... I have about 650 hrs on engine - I recently had the injectors rebuilt and changed out the fuel.... neither of these steps have improved it considerably... is this normal for a yanmar?

I have the same problem

We have the same problem with our 16hp Yanmar in our 1989 30' Hunter. A dishonest mechanic got me for $5,ooo and my engine runs the same. Hard to start, smokes at first and then runs fine. I read yesterday in sail magazine to keep diesel tank full and replace the fill cap rubber ring periodiclly to keep moisture out of the diesel. Do you put Biocide in your tank? The mechanic that took me said he replaced the injectors but I was told that bad ones could cause slow starts and smoke. Good Luck, Matt on Zoloft

Dribbling injectors?

I've read on saabnet that some older "Gas" engines are hard starting because of "dribbling injectors". Basically causing some flooding. Is it possible that a diesel one can suffer dribbling injectors?? That could explain the smoke ????? J. McCue

Try switching injectors between the two cylinders. If the problem moves from one cylinder to the other with the injector you have found the problem.

Question

Sorry, I don't know enough to help, but I am always eager to learn something new. Please tell me how you know which cylinder is not firing.

response to question

You can tell which cylinder is firing by flipping each cylinder compression lever - if no change... that is the one not firing... the other one will kill the engine since it is firing only on 1... fyi, these compression levers are great to know about ... if you ever run your house bank down too low to turn the engine over.... you can open up these levers and there will probably be enough juice to spin the engine ... while spinning at a high rpm close one lever and that cylinder can fire and then you close the second one and your are good to go....

Yanmar Starting

Someone mentioned flipping the decompression lever to see which cylinder is operating. Never open a decompression lever while the engine is operating. This can cause serious engine damage. The purpose of the decompression lever is to allow easier starting.

Bad compression?

You could have bad compression on that one cylinder. A mechanic can put a high pressure gauge on each cylinder to see if they are up to spec.

Hard Starting Yanmar

I too am plagued by the initial hard to start syndrome. Oddly enough, something that helped a little was draining the water/fuel filter. Go figure it.
