Yesterday I went to shut off my engine and heard a noise coming from the fresh water pump. I also noticed some antifreeze in the bilge. Today I took the pulley off the pump and removed the fill cap. Antifreeze started leaking from where the shaft enters the pump. Any suggestions on rebuilding?
Thanks!

I assume you actually are referring to the raw water intake pump as I can't imagine how antifreeze would get into your fresh water system. While the theory of rebuilding this pump, to install new seals on the saft, sounds pretty easy, I found it impossible. It may be that when my pump began leaking, it was already over 25 years old and had never been taken apart previously, other than to replace the impeller and cover gasket. In any event, I found it impossible to remove the shaft from the pump no matter what I tried. You may need a hydraulic press to do so. In the end, I replaced the entire pump with one from Depco at a very reasonable price. Think of it this way: rebuilding a 25 yr old pump is like putting a new saddle on an old horse: you still have an old horse. Buy a new pump and keep the old one as an emergency spare.

warren i think he is talking about the fresh water circulating pump on the engine...if that is the case you can buy a new one for about 175.00 or you can contact the Flying Dutchman in Oregon ...he rebuilt mine for about 85.00 and shipping ..he put in anew shaft and bearings mechanical seal and impeller and set it back to me you will have to get a new gasket from yanmar

just clean the old surfaces good ..use a little permatex gasket silicon on the gasket and don't over tighten the bolts ...put the belt back on...fill the anti freeze and go sailing

I'm heading down tomorrow w/new pump, permatex and gasket in hand. When re-filling the antifreeze is there a need to bleed air out of the system?

some times you have to depending on if you drained the hot water heater hoses ...top it off on the heat exchanger and then leave the cap off and wait a few mins and let it find it own level and then top it off again and see what happens
