Yanmar 2GM20F emits thick black smoke

After a 2 1/2 month lay-up, the 2GM20F diesel on my '88 H33.5 emits a thick black smoke sporadically. It starts normally, revs up normally, shows no lack of power, and otherwise runs normally. If I rev it quickly from idle to max RPM it will again emit a very thick black smoke. It doesn't do this every time. Has anyone experienced this? Any suggestions as to the problem? Thanks David "South Wind"

Good move

The soot is built up in the pipes, especially in the mixing elbow. Once you've backed out of the slip, gun it for 10 seconds to blow out the smoke and carbon. Like clearing your throat, and preserves your engine.

Reving quickly?

David: Reving it quickly may be your problem too. Try doing it slowly. I would suggest that you take her out for about a 1-2 hour run. Run it at 3000 rpms for the entire time. When you get back to the dock, be sure to cool her down by letting her idle for 5-10 minutes. Then rev her up to about 2000 rpms and pull the fuel cutoff. Then you she have cleaned her out properly and this fuel problem may go away. Be sure that you have a clean prop, bottom and a new filter before you venture out. You may as well give her an oil/filter change too.

2GM20F Soot

Bill, Thanks for the input about my smoking yanmar. I know that the mixing elbox isn't the problem. I just removed and cleaned it in April '02. Have you ever heard of a carbon buildup in the exhaust hose between the mixing elbow and the exhaust cannister or blockage from barnacles etc. in the exhaust hose from the exhaust cannister to the exhaust outlet. How would you go about cleaning these hoses. I think that there could be a restriction in one of the hoses that is causing a build up of carbon. What do you think?

soot

I have a 2001-2GM20F in my 290 and if I give it too power all at once it will smoke black soot out the exhaust ,but if I increace speed at a slower rate its just fine no soot or smoke ,I also had a problem once with build up on the prop, what I do now is after it warms up I run it at 3000 rpms until I am ready to put up my sails I no longer have much soot or smoke, its not like a gas engine you can't punch the trottle too fast ,they can't handle too much fuel too fast its got to be gradually.

In gear or out?

I had a friend who thought his diesel was shot because of the thick black smoke while under way. Turns out the engine was under great strain from a fowed prop. So my question is, does it smoke in gear or out? Bob H31 s/v Lady Di II

Check your fuel injectors

After experiencing much the same when throttling above 2500 rpms, I finally gave up guessing and gave it over to the marina machanics. They discovered two leaking fuel injectors. Three new fuel injectors and $200 later, my engine ran clean, much smoother and at as high an RPM as I wanted to push it.
