Good day all,

The last few times I have used my boat, I have noticed a change in the oil pressure/Water temperature alarm that sounds when I fire up the diesel.

In the past, it would emit a steady 'beeeeeeeeep' until the oil pressure came up (after engine start). Now, instead of the solid beep, it's a broken 'beeep--beeep--beeep...' until engine start. At first, I thought it may be some moisture in the alarm or a bad contact, but the 'beeping' pattern is a bit too regular for it to be a sickly speaker.

I've checked the Yanmar manual that came with the boat, and also the one that's available online to see if this change is significant; There doesn't seem to be any reference to this scenario at all. I've also done a quick forum search, but found no references to this problem.

Anyone know what this is? Should I be mildly concerned, or panicking?

Thanks to all,
--Jon

Beeper going bad

Could be the piezoelectric beeper is not getting enough current and is cycling.
99.44% of all electrical problems is corroded connections.

Your first step in tracking down this gremlin would be to short out the wires right at the oil pressure sensor and then energize the alarm circuit (starter switch). If the intermittent alarm continues, the problem on the speaker side. If the tone is solid, the problem is on the sensor side.

Good luck and let us know if this works

The problem will likely rest in the wiring harness. Check and clean all connector points and measure voltage going in to the control panel. The wires develop with time increased resistance and this will affect the voltage. If sensors are operating properly and voltage is ok then the buzzer would need replacemen although I have used buzzers for years while all they can do is groan. I believe that as long as they can issue a loud enough warning they are still usable because as you will find out this buzzers are not cheap.
