My Yanmar 2GM is leaking red fluid slightly...i am sure its transmission fluid (clutch stuff) but cannot for the life of me find where to look for this!

iesel Fuel?

Chris, this could be dyed diesel fuel. Yanmars are notorious for leaking diesel around the secondary fuel filter. Check the archives on this site for plenty of information. To be sure, take a clean paper towel and wipe the fuel filter all around and see what you find. If it is trans fluid, it will most likely eminate from the back of the engine around the reduction gear.

Dyed Fuel for sure

Chris, Paul is probably right. I owned a 28.5 for 7 years and the tranny used same lube oil as the engine. I have never seen motor oil that is red. Look on top of tranny (access under rear berth) and you'll find a screwed-on cap (possibly orange color) that is actually a dipstick. Unscrew it and check level. There is a mark no more than 3/8 from bottom of stick. That is your full level mark.

Some trannies use automatic transmission fluid

At least I think so. Check your engine manual.

Quick added note re: dip stick

You are supposed to check it without screwing it in. In other words, unscrew it, wipe it off and drop in without screwing it back in, pull out and view. Comes from seldon manual for gm series yanmars. We checked this by emptying and then putting in specified amount of oil and then checking this way. You don't want to overfill or underfill tranny. Is that right???

I seem to remember that the transmission dip stick SHOULD be screwed back in to get an accurate measurement. Where did your information come from? Thanks. Ken Palmer, S/V Liberty http://www.lakeontariosailing.com

Copper colored washers

The leak is more then likely diesel fuel. the fuel lines have washers/gaskets at each joint if these are over tightened they will develop acut and will leak no matter how much you tighten. Solution is to pick up some spares and keep them in your parts box. I recently purchased all off the washers and 0 ring in the fuel system including the bolt that fits through the banjo fitting at the fuel pump ( the one with the bleed screw ). Total cost $13.50

Comes from a drain tube

Thanks for all the input! I think it is from a plastic drain tube to the right of the lift pump (?) on the engine block ... not pouring out but the only tube that is moist at the end (there are 3). What do you spose is going on with this?

Drain Tubes For Engine Coolant

If the three plastic drain tubes are on starboard side of your 2GM I suspect they are the drain tubes for the engine coolant. A reddish fluid leak from this might be a severely rusted coolant. When I bought my four year old 30T this is what I found as previous owner never changed the coolant. Now I religiously (at suggestion of my Yanmar mechanic) change the coolant annually. If the fluid is truly red and not rust colored I would agree with previous posts that you probably have a dyed diesel fuel leak. I once had a very slight fuel leak which was finally traced to the banjo washers on each side of the fuel pump. It was so slight you could not see any fuel on the engine but could feel it was oily and running down to bottom of pan where it dripped into bilge. Good luck with your search.
