Just signed deal to buy a Hunter 31 with a 2GM Yanmar. Broker listed HP as 18. Data plate reads 13. Yanmar info found online says 18HP max 16 HP cruise 13 KW? Tech rep at Yanmar seemed unsure and a bit disinterested though he did say 2GM's are all 18HP max. I like the boat for the deal we are getting but am interested if there is a difference in HP on different 2GM's and what the difference in the engines might be/upgrades etc.. Thanks Rob Ripchick

We had a 18 HP 2GM in our H28...

Great engine and boat. Some of the older 2GMs were 13 HP. Ours was a 1989. Terry

Yanmar

Rob; We have a 1984 H31 with the 2GM13 HP Yanmar. Yanmar boosted the HP on the 2GM sometime in the late 80's to 18 HP. The broker should know enough to look at the plate on the front of the engine for the HP rating. Make sure you get a good surveyor to check anything else the broker may have told you. We bought our H31 new in 1984 and have never had a problem with the engine. Mac

Thanks Mac

Survey showed 13HP as well. Honest mistake on the Broker's part. It is lame that the tech rep at Yanmar did not know about the difference though! What is difference in the engines? Can the early engines be upgraded? Boat seemed to do ok as is but we are in the Hudson with a heavy current and could use the extra power when docking etc if an upgrade to the existing engine is a viable/cost effective option. I certainly am not going to replace a good running engine just to gain a few HP.

Take Mack Boring class

I bought a 1987 Hunter 31 in November 1999. In February 2000, I took the diesel engine class at Mack Boring in New Jersey. It really gave me a lot of confidence in the 2GM20F engine. We have added Oil Pressure and Water temperature gauges, additional inline fuel filter, and fuel gauge. We change our own oil, belts, impeller and filters. We bleed fuel lines underway and have replaced engine mounts. The biggest benefit though is removing the mystery from engine operation and being confident when we have to use it. I highly recommend the class for anyone depending on a diesel engine for their pleasure and safety. Enjoy!

2GM vs 2GM20

The diference between the 2GM (13hp) and the 2GM20 (18hp) is in the displacement and operating rpm of the engine. Neither of these are owner adjustable. Pat McCartin Inland Marine Diesel Buford, Ga imd_ga@hotmail.com
