Yanmar 1GM10

In response to Mike Swietzer:

I think the Yanmar !GM 10 is perfect for the Vega. It weighs only 170
lbs or so, is pretty small and has plenty of power to push the hull.
Maybe you could get a used 1GM and rebuild it. They look like a pretty
simple engine. It might cost alot less to rebuild a Yanmar than a BMW
engine.

I use a big 3 bladed prop - 10" pitch and 13" diameter. For me the
pitch is too much cause I got to hull speed at low RPM, then when I was
motoring into rough seas, the engine works too hard. Also the diameter
is too big. At 13" it comes within 1/2" of the hull and I understand
that that is too close. So I plan to get a 3-bladed 12" diameter, 9"
pitch prop. That will get my RPMs up and lessen any interference of the
hull with the water flow.

I plan to install a fresh water cooling system for the Yanmar. It costs
about $500.00. I just can't stand the thought of all that salt water in
the engine.

Has anybody else retro-fitted a freshwater cooling system on a Yanmar 1
GM10?

Does anybody know how to start a 1GM with the crank? The engine does
not seem to have enough inertia to keep going and start after I take the
crank off.

Hi:

I've been a stout defender of the Yanmar 1GM10 Diesel
engine. But now I'm about to change my mind.

My engine(new)had less than 1000 hours of running time,
when it became more and more difficult to start. I had it
checked out and was advised the engine needed a valve job.

I disconnected (and later reconnected) the engine myself
and brought it to an authorized repair shop. As it turned
out, just about every gasket was leaking and needed to be
replaced (cost of gasket 5 Dollars, labor cost about 500
Dollars)

Anyway, the whole repair cost me just less of 5000 Dollars!
(I would have gotten a new engine for a LOT less!).
Right now the engine is back on my VEGA, but not running
right. The engine won't run over 2000 RPM (normal max RPM
3600).

I'm scared to death to call the repair man; I think I've
been taken for a sucker!

Did any one out there have a similar experience? I would
like to know.

I had a similar experience except the problem was with the fuel
system (rebuild of the injector pump, injectors and adjust the
timing). It operated as expected prior to the problems, but now I
can't get more than 2200 RPM under load. I've had it in to more than
one authorized repair shops and they can't find anything that wrong
with it. They suggested going to a smaller prop. But that doesn't
make any sense to me as it operated fine prior to the fuel problems.

Hi.:

Thanks for your reply- looks like I'm not the only one
having problems with the 1GM10

I have a 3-blade 13"x8" prop, and it pushed me with 3000
RPM
at 6.5 MPH (calm sea). Of course now with only about 2000
RPM I barely make 5 MPH. I can run the engine at 3000 RPM
(for a few seconds), but it starts to scream and makes
sounds like it will fall to pieces.....

I think the major problem comes from the so called
mechanics- a guy gets a screwdriver into his hands an
immediately calls himself a "master mechanic" and charges
85 Dollars per hour. And because I'm not a mechanic
