I'm in search of a used/salvaged Yanmar 1GM replacement engine for my Hunter 27. Please alert if anyone knows of any availability. Also, has anyone had any experience with retrofitting with a 1GM10, particularily the engine mounts?

Replacing an engine

I went looking for a replacement for our 1SB three years ago. There was a fellow involved in one of the marinas in Bayfield, WI, who was buying and rebuilding old Yanmars, and had quite a collection of 1GM10's. Sorry, I don't remember his contact info.

I was on my way to trading in the 1SB and buying a rebuilt 1GM10 from him when I called around to other Yanmar folks. I got lucky when I called Torreson Marine. They had a 1GM10 that they had sold to a fellow who put 50 hours on it, and then abandoned his boat due to illness. They ended up salvaging the boat, but pulled the engine to resell. I got a like new, 5 year old 1GM10 for $2,200.

I had our marina team pull the old engine, and install the new one. The mounts are narrower than the 1SB (the 1GM10 is smaller and lighter) but it wasn't a big job to put two steel rails in to hold the new mounts.

After one summer wit the original prop, we ordered a Campbell Sailor prop for last summer. Our cruising speed with the old plant was 4.5 knots - up to 5.2 knots for a short stretch on flat water. The new engine and prop drove us at 5.5 knots in all knids of conditions on our cruise around Lake Huron and back to Erie last summer.
