I'll be on the boat this week end. I got an impeller & gasket, fuel filter, oil filter, belt and engine zinc. Ok, now where does the zinc go. My yanmar book has nice pictures of the two & three cylinder engines. That's great. But, I have the one cylinder.

upper right side

Bill zinc is behind a diamond shaped plate on the upper right side as you are facing the front of the engine. there are two small 10mm screws that hold the plate in. It is also very important that you replace the rubber washer between the zinc and the mounting bolt and the gasket for the plate. whole shabang takes about five minutes to replace. if you are replacing all that other stuff you might as well relace the thermostat (and gasket) while you are in the engine compartment. takes about five minutes if you have the engine comp open and your tools out--considerably longer if you are out in high seas and trying to motor in and temp warning buzzer goes off! remember to run you engine a bit before changing the oil (to warm the oil) or you will spend the entire afternoon trying to suck it out thanks for the reminder I need to get out and do annual maintenance on my engine chris Drifter II H27

Zinc

Thanks, Chris. This is the first time I've fooled with the engine zinc, obviously. I wasn't aware of that gasket. You're right as long as I have to go by the Yanmar dealer again I'll do the thermostat also. While you're standing on your head clean your tach contacts, too.

part removal

Do you have to remove the altnator to get at the bolts ? I think I tried but had problems getting to the bolts.

do not need to remove alt

Gary you do not need to remove the alt. Buy a 10mm "offset" wrench and its not too bad. chris

You didn't tell me.

You didn't tell me the plate was behind the alt. next to the starter solinode... If just loosen the the alt. and rotate it all the way up (may have to take a connection off), then you can use an end wrench. You can only get 1/8 turn at a time. Use gasket maker. You don't want to go back in until next year.

Zink Gasket

If you can't get a zink gasket you can try this old trick. I learned it from my Grand Father who was a mechanic. Get a brown paper grocery bag. Use the cover plate to trace the shape of the gasket and cut it out with a razor or sissor. I use a pencil to punch the holes. Paint the paper with gasket cement (FORM-A-GASKET from the autoparts store comes in a tube or in a small can with a brush). Viola--- your're done. In a pinch you can eliminate the FORM-A-GASKET but the seal might leak a little althout it never has on me. This trick also works with the water pump gasket and any other gaskets not sublet to high temperature.

Gasket

Howard, Basically that's what I did. Yanmar place wasn't open when I needed them. I think your Grandfather knew my Grandfather. Bill

Good bye Grand Pa... And Thanks

Bill, Grand Pa passed away about 15 years ago. I have all of his tools. Many from his auto shop inlcuding a few tool that came with Ford's Model T. Drill presses, grinders and a bunch of large scale wood tools. Each time I do a project I remember him. Kind a nice way to remember a geat guy. He taught me a lot. He wasn't much of a sailor, but boy did he know engines. We lived on the Ocean then on Long Island and he would swim in the Atlantic until late October each year

Grandfathers

My Grandfather was a railroad man, as was my father. I remember getting scrap wood and Grandpa's tools. What did I build? Toy boats, of coarse.

Don't forget the "O" ring.

The zinc attaches to the plate cover via a threaded stud and nut. There is an "O" ring that goes between the stud base and the plate. A piece of file folder can be used to make a gaket. After installation run the engine to temperature to make sure there are no leaks.
