What happens? I have no idea and don't call me crazy but I just bought this boat " project hunter" I hope for the best. Anyone can recommend a shop near Tampa FL to rebuilt this Yanmar 110hp?

Why do you believe it can be rebuilt? There is not enough information to identify this possibility. Perhaps it would be money better spent repowering with a new engine or a new rebuilt engine.

There was a fire, the damage will be extensive. Time to repower with a Nanni or a Beta.

I was thinking the same thing. If you did a rebuild yourself you would have to take it down to the block. Everything rubber needs replacement. Starter, alternator, and all the wiring. The list goes on and on.

I think you can buy a rebuilt yanmar 110 for $5k or so.

Here we go, finally after 3 weeks My brand new yanmar arrives, I downgraded it to the 80HP I hope will be enough power to get in and out of the marina
Thanks guys for all the idea on this, next step is to built a new engine box hard to find the same wood of the bulkheads!

Looks shiny and new!

P.S. You may want to update your profile to say you have a Hunter 50, not a 34. That 80 HP engine would be enough to get a 34 in and out of your marina, on plane. :yikes:

You are probably better off being a bit underpowered than overpowered. Diesels like to be run under load. With a smaller diesel you won't be as fast when motoring at optimal RPMs, however when overpowered the boat will reach hull speed below optimal RPMs which ain't good for the motor.

For In & out of marina or a Florida Inlet, the engine should be adequate for moderate sea conditions.

you may want to avoid.

80HP is a good size for your 50' Hunter.

When I was searching for my Hunter, I found that the Engine size in HP was slightly larger than the Boat length.

Just an observation, not a correlation.

Your Hull speed hits the limit to forward speed, when not in a current, like the Gulf Stream.
