one banger
I don't know on what basis the previous posters would doubt that this vessel you're looking at would have the original engine. I don't think 20-30 year old marine diesels are unusual. There were a number of single cylinder yanmar diesels in use around 1978: the YSB, YSE,YSM, SVE, and SB. All had about 8HP which may be the biggest drawback. Its barely enough power for the boat. The 1GM is too new to have been original in a 1978 vessel. There should be a tag on the engine with the model number. My 1979 Hunter 27 has an SB-8. Its 22 years old and original. It doesn't smoke, drink (oil), and starts instantly. I don't know what experience the previous posters have but I haven't had any problems with getting normal maintenance parts (www.torressen.com) such as filters, gaskets, metric screws, hoses, impellers. I haven't needed anything else. I run it a lot when we are aboard - either for propulsion or charging batteries. It runs about six to eight hours per gallon. The H-27 weighs in at about 6500 pounds and I would be happier with a 12HP diesel for driving it. 8HP is OK on flat water without current or headwind. Under those conditions with a clean bottom and no load I can get 6 knots. Typical after the boat is loaded up for cruising is more like 4.5 knots. Into a 25 knot wind and 4-6ft seas I have slowly been pushed backwards under power. Good luck David
