I have a Yamaha 6 outboard that runs just fine with one exception. When it has not been used for an extended period it won't start. However - after having pulled the starter rope a bunch of times with not even a sputter, it will always start on the first or second pull when you try it again on the next day.

Stored engine starting

Dan We have the same problem with our 1990 Evinrude 9.9. Suggest you install brand new sparkplugs at the start of each new season for after a long idle period. For some reason the old plugs seem to get all crudded up sitting for a long time. Gap them, install them, and you should be able to start within four pulls.

Spark plugs every season.

Dan: I'd have to agree with Stu. The first thing to do every season when you take your motor out of storage is to change the plugs and the lower end lube oil. If you have a 4 stroke you also need to change the crank case oil. It sounds to me like you may have a fuel problem too. I would take a can of spray carb cleaner with you and run that thru the carb air filter to clean the varnish out of the jets and fuel bowl assembly. Also if you have a fuel filter in the engine, you may want to change that too. Every time you are done with the engine you should run it out of fuel. I am now adding fuel stabilizer to my tank at the beginning of the season to keep the fuel fresh.

I had a similar problem with a 4 HP 4 stroke, that had sat for awhile. Couldn't get it started no matter what. Finally had to dismantle the Carb. and spray with carb cleaner. Seems there was a small bit of corrision in the jets. Once that was cleaned everything went back to normal, one or two pulls and I was in business again. Job was easy even without manual, took about 20 minutes.

Be Careful w/Carb Cleaner!!!

Dan, Be careful using carb cleaner with a 2 Stroke Motor! If your motor is 2 Stroke carb cleaner will completely remove the effect of the oil mixture in your gas. If you use carb cleaner make sure it all evaporates first before you start (remove the air silencer first) and don't run through with the engine running!!!!You'll be putting a lot of wear on your motor without realizing it! 6 won't start

hello Dan, what is most likly happening, is the fuel in the carb float bowl is evaporating, and the additives are concentrating into a goo that coats and dries on the main jet, preventing fuel flow. new fuel softens and dissolves the old clog. disconnect the tank and run the engine until the carb is dry and that should end the problem . john

Hard starting...

...could also be caused by sticky piston rings. It's a little hard to tell, but if the rings are stuck in their grooves, then you won't feel much compession while pulling the starter cord. My Nissan did that last year, and it had me going until I realized exactly what was going on. Enjoy! Jim Maroldo s/v: Lil' Wass Ett
