Yamaha Y-26 tall rig Flathead Lake Montana
I was recently demasted - lower shroud let go from fatigue with disastrous results, the mast was broken at the spreaders. I have been sailing my Y-26 for about 20 years and love the way it sails. I am looking for a replacement mast and hope somebody could supply information on where I could find a mast.

I have a Yamaha 26 Tall Rig also.

I am very sorry to hear that you lost your mast.

The information in bold below is from the web site yamahasailboats.org. It is possible to get certain parts. I hope they get a reasonably priced mast for you. They just might be able to provide you with a new mast. If they can't have a new one built they may be able to provide you with a detailed plan of your mast including the exact section used.

You might try and find a good local rigger who can help you thru the process.

If all else fails you will need to contact custom mast manufacturers such as:
Dwyer Aluminum Mast Company

Ballenger
Proctor
Selden
Hall Spars
Atlantic Spars

etc:

Good luck with finding a new mast. Let us all know how things go.

This gentleman knows English well enough to do business with, and the service I received when I ordered parts was excellent. My method of doing business is to photograph the part for which I needed a replacement, with a ruler next to it if appropriate, then e-mail it to him. In a couple days, I would get part numbers and price quote with shipping.

Ken,
I am curious to know how things are working out in your search for finding a replacement mast for your Yamaha 26 tall rig. By the way what exactly failed and under what wind and sea conditions. Did you have to cut away the mast and rigging or were you able to manage to bring the entire broken rig into port.

I hope your search for a new mast is working out and that you have found reasonable shipping rates. I also hope that when things have settled down you would kindly let us all know about the process you went thru and the best resources you found for obtaining a new mast. I for one who owns a similar boat would be grateful as one never knows when such a misfortune can occur. We would all benefit from the shared knowledge gained from your experience.

I finally found a reasonable freight rate from Japan to Flathead Lake Montana. I now have to find out if there are any US duties & taxes on sailboat mast from Japan. Just one more item to go through. I do have a back up plan, as there is a rigging company in Seattle that has been more than helpful as they are promoting a US custom made mast from Selden Eastern US. This company is more expensive than the Japnese manufacture with the new freight rate. The boat has been put away for the seson and I have travelling on business I have to make a decision this USA - Japanese.

Ken,
Glad to hear you close to finalizing your replacement mast issue. At some point it would great to know exactly who and what product you used and how much the replacement mast cost including shipping and anything else you feel that might be helpful to your fellow Yamaha sailboat owners in the event we have to follow in your footsteps so to speak.

If you are ever in the San Francisco area and would like to go out for a sail on SF bay just let me know.

Ken,
Would you kindly let us all know how the replacement of your mast went including costs. Were you able to match the exact mast section. You had previously let us know that you had costs to replace the rig from both a Japanese manufacturer and also from a local source but did not elaborate. One of the reason's this would be helpful is I want to be certain I have enough insurance coverage on my boat in the event of a complete mast failure. An explanation of what you had to go thru would be wonderful help.
Thanks,
Jan

what's the big frigging secret?
In other cafes,, we share every detail of shipper,,, shipping lines. their prices,, who sells what ,,parts prices,,, IN ORDER FOR ALL TO BENEFIT by being here,,,
Is it that so many Yamaha boats in this planet,, by asking,, prices go up? I've noticed this behavior, in other threads here as well.
Let's share folks,,
Also from Japan to Seattle ,, look up Wallenius Shipping Line.. they simply lay it on the side of their car carrier Ro-Ro vessel ,, I shipped my 320KG Harley from Korea to Long Beach for USD 800, when I went around the world with it last year. It should not cost more than 200 bucks, considering weight and measure ,, 50 bucks for customs declaration in Japan ,, may be another 50 in Seattle.

Mast

Has anyone tried Selden? They made a mast for a friend of mine who built a 43' custom sailor, and he was pretty happy with it.
