I am posting this as a new thread outside of my Restoration thread as I think it is noteworthy for other Yamaha owners.
On my 1977 Y25 MKII, I have been troubled since I purchased the boat by a gate valve which is situated under the fore section of the cockpit and immediately behind the stairs to the salon in the aft bilge area. It was designed as a drain for the cockpit and cockpit lockers.
I do not like gate valves on a sailboat and I had an intuition that I should take a good look at this when I got her to the yard for bottom and paint work.
Well, thank heavens I did, as you will see from the photos below. This is likely the only through hull valve that had not been changed over the years and likely because of its rather daunting size. I do not know if the other Yamaha models have a similar cockpit draining system, but if so, I would inspect them carefully at the next opportunity. I will now rest much easier after having changed this. It could have been a dreadful outcome if left unattended.
