I acquired my 25 MkII from Michigan and it now resides in the Annapolis, MD, area. I have a fairly simple question about the manual cockpit operated bilge pump and where it drains. I traced the hoses and the drain converges on a valve/seacock thru hull in near the stern. Any water collected in the cockpit drains into the same are also. Does this valve need to be opened only when underway to induce flow and get the bilge fluids collected by manual pumping out of the hull?

I also saw that another owner had a Jabsco Amazon (P/N 29270-000) manual bilge pump on his boat. Can this be bolted in without any modification in terms of spacers, additional drilling ,etc.?

Thanks all

Mine one is 25 MI, the connection of teh drain is same as your but no seacock, that means all the water in the cockpit and those from the manual pump will drain out off hull. Since the pump is in a much higer level than the sea , it is very unlikley the sea water will flow back.

I got tit replace by a Whale 500 (may be wrong , just forget) with minor modification .

Thanks very much for the reply. I was assuming this was the case since the collected water was all at a height above the drain at the bottom of the hull, but I needed a Yam owner to confirm this for me. I will open the valve and pour water into it to see if the flow is adequate. I hope it works.

The seacock should be left in the open position. I assume the PO installed it in case a hose failed. You may think about servicing the valve in case you ever need to use it.

It looked fine, i.e., I turned the valve in all directions and there was no corrosion evident, but I will have to see how it functions underway. Most of my sailing time has been in daysailers (Catalina 22s, some 27s), or round-the-buoy race efforts (J22s) where I never gave a manual bilge pump a second thought (other than the crappy hand held model from Westmarine, which my boat came with anyway). It's something I will have to focus on now.

someone has posted this before in 4/12/2011 under the title Yamaha 25 Under Cockpit Gate Valve in this forum, you can go and see the picture of their conditions.

Welcome aboard,
We covered this in an earlier post. look around where Boffin suggested. The pump sounds familiar to my installation. It does require a 1/4" spacer made out of some abs pipe in a large diameter (don't remember the exact size).
Your cockpit is self bailing and the seacock is used in case of a hose failure. You won't have any water coming up into the cockpit. I made a grated plate that keeps thing out of drain and a screen out of a milk crate to catch things that you will inevitably drop down there. I use one of those foam noodles cut to fit to cover the opening into the cockpit floor.

It took me a while to figure this one out........ the floor of your cabin is actually a false floor with the actual hull below. You can hose down the interior of the cabin including under seat storage and aft area under cockpit. just watch the water level in the bilge and pump it out with the bilge pump! Works great for freshening up the interior.
The engine has it's own containment pan and has to be cleaned up with absorbent pads ect. Don't let that stuff get in the bilge -- it needs to be contained.

My boat is very dry, if you find you need to pump the bilge regularly, you'll need to inspect your shaft and packing.

Have fun discovering your new boat!

Thank you, Syntonos. I appreciate you confirming my thoughts on the bilge pump and the cabin floor. I thought about the cabin floor last weekend and since the bilge pump hose intake sits where the keelbolts and drive shaft exit the hull, I could scrub the interior, wash it and hose it off and let the dirty water accumulate where the bilge pump collects. I think the tip to cover up the intake near the cockpit is a fine idea. Already, it looks like some junk got in there and I will pull it out with suction or some hooked device. Also, I did notice that the diesel engine has a separate collection compartment that must be dealt with or emptied some other way. It doesn't commingle with the bilge pump. When my boat first went in the water, I had a bunch of water collect down in the bilge intake area which I pumped out with one of those plastic Westmarine pumps, 4 buckets worth. Since then, it has remained dry, implying no leaking in the drive shaft seal, which is delightful. I already have the Jabsco Amazon on order, and will have to deal with an adapter or spacer when I try to install it. The PO did tell that the manual bilge pump needed to be replaced.

Y25 Amazon pump installation

Found the thread regarding my installation. It's back on page 4, title "electric bilge pump". I used a 7" pvc pipe for the spacer. If I remember correctly you have to re-orient the housing to get the intake in the right place. My boat already had it installed. You may have to enlarge the opening to have it fit.

Waiting for my Jabsco Amazon bilge pump to arrive. Thanks, Syntonos, will keep the 7" PVC pipe as spacer in mind and deal with it when I get the pump. Meanwhile, I tested the self bailing feature by dumping water down the cockpit drain. Same for the sink drain in the cabin. It all worked.
