yahoo groups frustration

I hate passwords on free sites. I rarely try to get on the Vega yahoo groups site partly because I get frustrated trying to remember my password or username. I end up re-registering, which makes it harder to remember which username I used with which password. I'm up to NathanWagner9753, and 9,700 of the others are probably ME!. At some point I wrote down my password. But now
it's asking for my email and says it doesn't recognize it. (I haven't changed my email address for 2 decades.) It won't even let me tell it my dutifully recorded user name and password. Is there no way to make our site LESS secure and just leave the door unlocked? Or is there a risk that some unsavory Alberg 30 type might sneak in and steal our holding tank diagrams?

Nathan:I don't have a good answer for you. This is the way Yahoo groups work. The e.g. Alberg 30 group has their own website and their own listserver and aren't constrained by the way Yahoo does things. OTOH Yahoo is free. I couldn't keep track of all my logon IDs/passwords without a spreadsheet. Perhaps you need to do that or (just joking) a tattoo. BTW one Yahoo account is all I need for all the Yahoo groups I participate in.I'm not sure if this will make things better or worse: there is a Facebook Vega group at Albin Vega Group You will need a Facebook account to look there.Perhaps someone else will have a better answer for you.Alan

I have used the same username and password for non-money, non-government websites since 1995. Who cares if someone hacks my magazine accounts? or Yahoo groups or New York Times magazine or my landline phone company or any of that stuff?

There are plenty of secure password managers out there where you can keep all your passwords and account details, whether for basic stuff like the Vega list, or financial information such as online banking. You’ll still need a password to access them, but only the one. I’ve used KEEPASS for years with no problems, but there are others.  Alisdair      From: AlbinVega@yahoogroups.com [mailto:AlbinVega@yahoogroups.com] Sent: 20 March 2016 10:48To: AlbinVega@yahoogroups.comSubject: Re: [AlbinVega] yahoo groups frustration  Nathan:  I don\'t have a good answer for you.  This is the way Yahoo groups work.  The e.g. Alberg 30 group has their own website and their own listserver and aren\'t constrained by the way Yahoo does things.  OTOH Yahoo is free.    I couldn\'t keep track of all my logon IDs/passwords without a spreadsheet.  Perhaps you need to do that or (just joking) a tattoo.  BTW one Yahoo account is all I need for all the Yahoo groups I participate in.  I\'m not sure if this will make things better or worse:  there is a Facebook Vega group at Albin Vega Group  You will need a Facebook account to look there.  Perhaps someone else will have a better answer for you.  Alan  On Sun, Mar 20, 2016 at 12:52 AM, \'Nathan Wagner\' wagnern@... You wouldn’t like it if it was less secure. The bad guys aren’t interesting in holding tank designs, they just want to flood your inbox with spam – how long would you remain here if only one email in a thousand was relevant to Vegas, and the rest were Ponzi schemes, porn, request for bank details because your card had been compromised, or information about your late Nigerian uncle who left you a million dollars/pounds/euros?Additionally, being able to assume the identity of a genuine user isn’t good news; remember a year or so ago there was a flurry of requests from ‘members’ who had been stranded in a foreign country after being mugged/shipwrecked and were looking for a couple of hundred dollars/pounds/euros to get them home?Alisdair  From: AlbinVega@yahoogroups.com [mailto:AlbinVega@yahoogroups.com] Sent: 20 March 2016 06:52To: AlbinVega@yahoogroups.comSubject: [AlbinVega] yahoo groups frustrationI hate passwords on free sites.  I rarely try to get on the Vega yahoo groups site partly because I get frustrated trying to remember my password or username. As one of the group owners I wish I had a solution for the password problem. We wrestled with putting a forum on the American Vega site but rejected the idea because this group was so well established and active. Besides, there would still have to be a password to avoid the problems with spam.So much less costly (Free) and more efficient at sharing information, Yahoo and the internet get the credit for ending the paper newsletters we used to send out. I think the password hassle is a small price to pay.I should mention that there is also an American Vega Facebook group https://www.facebook.com/American-Vega-Association-137228353017787/ but, apparently because the Yahoo group is so well established it has had little activity. You still need a password for Facebook though."Fair winds"Chuck RoseSV Lealea, V1860

Hi Chuck. I was unaware of the separate American Vega Facebook page. Thanks for mentioning it!
