I was up pumping water out of my bilge today and noticed that shoe that holds the bottom of the rudder is loose? It has what looks like four Philips screws holding the shoe on and I'm wondering if they are wood screws or machine screws?

Next trip up I'll take some sand paper and a big Philips screw driver but was wondering if anyone else has ever had the shoe off of their skeg rudder and if so how is that thing attached?

27 degrees but sunny today at Cedar Point, lake is totally frozen.

Thanks,
-Bob

Hello Bob:

The previous owner had the gudgeon that holds the bottom of the rudder to the skeg remade last year before we bought the yamaha 37 Sarah V. Is this the part you are refering to?

Yep, thats it a gudgeon

Didn't know the correct name of the part, do you know how it is affixed to the skeg? Mine is loose so I hope to fix or replace it over the next couple of weeks before the season starts. Where did Russ get his replacement?

Thanks

Hi Bob:

The boat yard took it out and made a new SS one. A bad zink connection had damaged the previous one.

I even have photos of the work done.

This should be something left to a good welding shop, a lot of stress on that part.

Best regards,
