Y valve mechanism leaks

The Y valve mechanism looks fairly new but leaks pretty badly at the (gasketed?) seam when I opeate the head. I'm tempted to glob on some sealant and let it go, but if I choose a more elegant solution, does it make sense to open that mechanism up to replace a bad gasket, or should I just heave it and put in a new valve?

Gasket or O-Rig

I'm not sure what brand you have, but the Jabsco Y-valve (and others?) uses an O-ring. It is possible that it is not properly seated. You can easily open it, clean and dry the ring. Make sure you use a silicon bases lubricant, then re-assemble. (Note: Not a silicon glue or adhesive.) Vaseline or other petroleum based lubricants will cause deterioration of the rubber O-ring. When reassembling, be careful that the ring stays in the groove, and don't ovetighten. It really is an easy job and shouldn't take more than about 30 minutes. Oh, and don't forget to close the thru-hulls first. As to your idea of just putting sealant on the outside, it probably won't work, or won't work for long!

Similar Y valve problem

Had a similar problem with the Y valve on my 340 - on close inspection I found the housing had cracked - most probably due to stress caused by over tightening the fixing screws - despite being over 2 years old - Jabsco replaced it free of charge!

I'd replace it with a different type of y-valve

Jabsco y-valves are gate valves...I've never met one that didn't leak. Bosworth and Forespar are ball valves...they don't leak, and they take up half the room that a Jabsco does.
