Y Valve and overboard discharge

I sail only in the Atlantic where one can do overboard discharge. Existing system goes into holding tank only and head is used very little.. (Daysailer and grand-daughters.) No marina pump out available..

Current system (Jabsco) does not have a vented loop.

Plan I have is... cut 1.5 inch pipe. install 90 degrees fitting and go straight up. Install loop. Then on way back down, install Y valve. One to the tank and other to new Thur hull for overboard discharge.

Will this work??? Can I do the Thur hull above the water line or should it be below water line.

not to sound like a snob here....BUT.... if you want the side of your boat to look like a garbage scow after dumping over board it will prolly work .....haveing said that ...there may be some sort of code or reg requireing it to be below the water line......personally reg or no reg i would want it below the water line....IMHO....

Yes, you need an anti-siphon loop on the discharge, at least my Y valve is plumbed that way, probably because that head sits slightly under the water line at rest and fully when heeled. My system is as you describe, except: it is flexible sanitation hose and not solid pipe. I would not recommend solid pipe for this application. Definitely, the discharge through hull should be below the water line. Good luck!

Your plan works, but...

As Rick said, you want to use sanitation hose, not pvc pipe. And although there is no requirement to put the discharge thru-hull below the waterline, you definitely do NOT want it ABOVE for two reasons: 1. waste will stain the hull...and 2. The sight, sound and smell of a toilet flush, or worse yet a tank dump, is very unpleasant. So put it below the waterline which will require a seacock on the thru-hull.

Wye valve

Our 1991 model Hunter came equipped with two electric Jabsco heads, one 26 gallon holding tank and a macerator pump overboard discharge system. The pump's intake hose connects to a wye tank fitting, the same one that is used to pump out the tank. The discharge side of the pump is connected to a below-the-waterline sea cock and through hull fitting. This overboard discharge system does not have a vented loop, however, the toilet sea water intake used for flushing the bowl contents to the holding tank does.

The original sanitation system on our boat remains trouble free since we purchased her in 2002. We've sailed her several thousand miles all over PNW waters and completed several two month extended cruises. I follow the pump out procedure that Peggie recommends, and that we attest to, to help in keeping our system operating trouble and odor free.

At the risk of nitpicking...

Fwiw, it's not a wye valve...its correct name is "diverter valve,"...it's just colloquially referred to as a "Y-valve." A wye is a specific fitting.

Hi Peggie, Mr. Scotian referred to it as a "Y valve", hence my subject line reference. Our boat holding tank has a wye fitting as I referenced in my post. This arrangement allows the dock pump out to evacuate waste from the deck fitting or the macerator pump to evacuate waste into the sea from the same tank draw tube.

Peggy, I have all of the materials but the seacock and Thru Hull. Will do below water line per suggestion.
Question.. Do I need to continue with the 1.5 inch Seacock or could the Thru Hull and Seacock be reduced down to one inch????.. A 1.5 inch seacock is a massive device and a very large hole in hull. Once everything passes through the Joker Valve, it would be well broken up is my assumption re the reduction. Thanks in advance.

I'd go with 1.5"...

All toilets except for Jabsco--and even they now offer a choice--have a 1.5" discharge. Electric macerator pumps are the only tank discharge pumps that have a 1" discharge...but everything else--manual and electric diaphragm pumps and treatment devices--has 1.5" discharge. 1.5" is the standard size for tank inlet and discharge hoses.

All of which means that you CAN go with a 1" thru-hull...but it's gonna require using reducing adapters if anything but a Jabsco toilet and macerator pump are ever installed by you or any future owner.
