Y not overboard?

My C&C 34 was originally a lake boat, and has a holding tank but no "Y" valve and no option to discharge overboard. We keep it in Anacortes and cruise up into the Canadian Gulf Islands in the summer, but pumpouts are few and far between up north. We'd like to go farther, but the lack of pumpouts is a problem. I need to install an overboard discharge option. Any recommendations on Y valves, pumps (manual? electric?) etc.? Regards, Bruce

Hose

Bruce, I had the same problem on my old boat. I came up with a quick fix. I got a hose deck fitting like the one on the pumpout station, and fitted it with a long piece of flexible hose. Although it is not as good as installing a through hull fitting, it was a lot quicker, cheaper and work for those times when I was away from a pumpout station and could legally discharge. You just have to remember to clean it out before you put it away!

pump it!

Hold the fitting (or use a screw-on fitting) and pump it out. I had a hand pump on mine, but that is not hard to install if you don't have one already there.

The obvious question:

Is there a thru-hull with a working seacock? If so, it's simple matter to break the tank discharge hose and install a y-valve (Whale would be my choice), a pump (Whale manual or Jabsco electric macerator, a few feet of hose, and a vented loop between the pump and the thru-hull. If there is no thru-hull, Karl's solution is your best option.
