Historically..

It has not performed as well as some of the others in anchor tests. You'd be much better off with a Rocna, Spade or Manson Supreme..

Thought is had some of the best test results

As I remember it had some of the best test results by Practical Sailor. It is suppose to be set with only 3-1 scope too (big advantage in a crowded anchorage). http://www.xyzanchor.com/pdf/PracticalSailor-April06.pdf (reprint)

I never heard of

any of these anchors. <You'd be much better off with a Rocna, Spade or Manson Supreme> The xyz seems to be Bruce related. I like my Bruce a lot. Also the good old CQR. They will hold and reset if the direction of pull changes. The trouble with anchor ratings is they only pull in ideal situations for their particular anchor. There is nothing like a Danforth type for strsight line pull, but when the tide or wind changes the Danforth can pull out with a ball of mud in the flukes and you will drag as if there was nothing down there. Been there, done that. So where can I look at these new kid son the block? Spade, Rocna, Manson Supreme (that sounds like a 60s thriller)

Subscribe to Practical Sailor.

Fred: Subscribe to Practical Sailor. They have anchor tests on a regular basis. I my opinion (and someone else's too) there is no perfect anchor. The danforth style anchors are hard to beat for sheer holding power in the right bottom. Take this same anchor and try to set it in grass/weeds and you may swear that you forgot to tie an anchor on the line. I like my Delta. It can penetrate the grass/weeds and seems to hold well. It also does a good job in the mud & sand. We have two anchors and I think everyone should also have two different anchors that can perform in your sailing area.

I think I all depends where you live..

I agree 100% with Steve. I love my Delta and wouldnt trade it for anything in the world. Some of these newer designs may be better...but boy it sure likes funny to have an anchor that looks like spoon/fork combined or have a bubble ball. abe

It looks even funnier...

Quote: "but boy it sure likes funny to have an anchor that looks like spoon/fork combined or have a bubble ball." You'll be laughing really hard when your boat is on the rocks! I don't buy my anchors based on looks I buy them for performance and I can assure you the Rocna is the best performing all around anchor made today. Oh and I currently own two "real" CQR's, two Fortresses, one Manson Supreme, one "real" Bruce, one Fastset and two Spades one aluminum and one steel. The Rocna is a better performer than any of them but the Manson Supreme is a very close second. The construction quality of the Manson is a little shy when compared to a Rocna. The CQR's are the weakest all round performers I own other than the Fortresses if you expect wind / tide shifts. I use my Fortress as my dedicated stern anchor..

What nonsense

XYZ like a Bruce? XYZ has been getting good test results?! The claims on their website are severely misleading or just blatant lies. Here's what West Marine think of it, after their testing: "Could not get anchor to work. One pull at 900lb, but mostly dragged on the bottom." Here's what Sail mag thought: "Weighing in at only 12.5 pounds, its holding ability depends solely on how well it can dig into the bottom. The shank is also equipped with a knob that insures the XYZ will flip over if it lands upside down on the bottom. On the beach it flipped over and dug a long trench in the wet sand. But, no matter how hard we tried, we could not get the XYZ to set in any of our tests. We recorded intermittent readings that maxed out at about 300 pounds, but we were never able to get a legitimate set at any location and on any amount of scope." Brit mag Yachting Monthly agreed: "In our beach test it dug a long trench. No matter how hard we tried, we could not get the XYZ to set in any of our tests." Fred, Google is your friend... www.rocna.com www.spade-anchor.com etc
