My Xantrex Truecharge 2 20 amp has been throwing an "AC Input out of range" error. Happened 3 weeks ago but then was OK after about an hour off. Happened two days ago and was OK after a period of time off. Happened yesterday and has not recovered. First two were while plugged into 15 amp power on the hard. Last occurrence is at dock on 30 amp shore power. Voltmeter on AC power on boat measures 115-120 all times. Anyone ever experienced this? Any possible causes? Time to replace my 6 year old Xantrex with a better unit?

Did you install it? If you're not familiar with the boat's wiring, I would inspect every inch of the ac wiring between the breaker and the charger. I believe the charger wiring has a pigtail off the charger necessitating use of butt connectors. Verify there are no other connectors that a PO could have done. If you know how, you can rig a power cord from an outlet to the charger and see how it behaves (temporary)..Measure the voltage at the charger if there is a way to access.

Thanks Mark. It's worked fine for 6 years. I did install myself.... next step is to pull the unit out os lazerette to check wiring ....

Uummm... do you know what that "out of range" means? Low volts? Hi volts? CPS/Hz?

When I went to 3 x 31 batts, I found a Tru-Charge 40 at Bacons. It was only 6 months after manufacture date. It was a bolt-in for the 20. Just had to change the fuses to the batts (after the smaller fuses all blew under the higher 40-amps..

It's low or high voltage. Frequency from commercial power is not going to change

Now would be a good time to sort out all your tech questions
Going to the miami show xantrex usually has all their tech people there and i could ask for you
Have same charger in my boat

If I was home, I'd be looking in my owner's manual. Hz could be a problem if running off a generator, just to cover all bases.
UPDATE: I didn't want the manual. It's the OP that needs it.

Do you have something else in the boat connected to AC that is drawing a lot of current causing the voltage to drop? Something like an AC unit or heater, dehumidifier? You said you are on the hard. Using the correct length/AWG extension cord? Can you take the unit home and try charging the battery on your car to see if it is doing the same thing.

I've got the manual .... it says: "AC input out of range" ..."check your input". Voltage is OK but I don't know about Hz? Happens both on the hard (15 amp) and at dock (30 amp). Using SmartPlug 30 amp cord at the dock with a 30 amp extension cord. The unit started running late yesterday and ran fine all day today. Is it coincidental that it started at quitting time at the boat yard and that boat yard didn't work today ????

The OP states the onboard volt meters read normal at all times. If something in the yard was causing voltage issues. You would see that on those meters. While on the hard, you could have extension cord issues, but you would also see that on the meters. So, assuming the proper voltage is always present at the boat, start at the breaker and go to the unit. As I stated before, Hz is NOT going to change on commercial power even if voltage fluctuations occur. You could rig up a separate wire bundle fed from an outlet or as Brian suggested, remove and charge a battery at home. (Which would still require a wire bundle. Three wires)

Xantrex might have a faster response, but maybe first it could be the connection to the unit. I would suggest inspecting (by disassembly) the AC connection to the unit. I may have gotten dirty/resistive in the last 6 years. That explanation resolves the conundrum, the yard voltage is OK yet the (poorly connected) charger sees low voltage.

Is this during the charge phase? Can you reduce the charge rate and see if it fixes itself.
