This weekend I installed a new house battery bank. It is a Rolls 325 amp-hr bank that replaces the original Deka DP-24 that Beneteau delivers in the 343. (Last spring I added a 2nd DP-24 but overnight at anchor would still draw down the bank significantly.) I had been debating whether or not to install a battery monitor right off the bat because my DC panel does have a voltmeter. After having read through archives here I have become convinced that it would be a well spent couple of hundred bucks to install the monitor now.

A couple of months ago I saw the Xantrex Link 20 was available at Defender for about $250 +/-. Tonight I see that they do not offer it anymore and offer the Xantrex LinkPro instead for $289. The Xantrex website describes both models; however, they have presented the specs in such a manner that a side by side comparison is difficult, at best. Both models monitor 2 banks and seem to be capable of presenting the same data.

Does anyone have knowledge about the difference between these two?

Now that you have these quality batteries, I would be more concerned about your battery charger.

It appears that Xantrex is changing their product line. They now have LinkPro and the LinkLite. They look like very similar products with a slightly different array of features and capabilities.

Xantrex Link 20

Hi;
The Link 20 is a discontinued line, often available at a deep discount. It uses LEDs and draws a bit more current than the newer LCD display models. AFAIK the internal algorithms and circuitry are similar - there doesn't seem to be any advantages, one over the other!
I picked up a brand new Link 20 for about $125 last year on eBay!

I just replaced an old link 10 with the link pro. The link pro does not come with connecting wires or cable so you have to furnish them yourself. At this time I was able to just use the old wiring as the pro fit right into the old wiring set up for the Link 10. I still need to wire in the second battery bank but the system works well as it is for the house battery bank and the information is good to have.
There is a lot of info there that i never look at because i am too lazy to delve into the system,. Terry

Thanks for the Input

FWIW: My charger is a Xantrex TruCharge20. I kinda figured the Xantrex Link 20 battery monitor had been discontinued. The link to the Victron BMV was excellent.

The LinkPRO draws less current than the Link20, and a side by side comparison between the LinkPRO and the Victron BMV 602 shows that the Victron draws 55% less current than the LinkPRO.

Finally, the Victron is sold with all wiring & appurtenances for $30 less than Defender sells the LinkPRO without wiring. Sold.

For anyone interested I have attached a spreadsheet comparing the specs for the LinkPRO and the BMV 602.

And for us totally anal guys the Victron can be upgraded to include an RS-232 connector & software so we can download our battery use data to a laptop, create a spreadsheet, and share it with our non-sailing friends at a cocktail party. Top o' the line indeed!

FYI

The battery monitoring ability of the Xantrex Trucharge 20 only works when the charger is connect to AC current (shore power). At anchor, the meter does not show state of charge, etc. Even under AC power, the state of charge meter down not show any volltage below 13 volts. Although the charger will maintain three separate batteries, it will only show state of charge for two.

FYI back

John, the Xantrex TrueCharge is a battery shorepower charger. It is NOT a battery monitor, was never intended to do so, so the monitor status is meaningless unless you're plugged in. When it's charging it's float voltage is over 13 V, so that's why the meter reads over 13 V. Pretty well covered in the instruction manual, although I must admit I'm maybe one of the few who reads those things!:):)

Victron BMV-602 Installed

I finished installing the Victron battery monitor this morning. I had a minor problem with the shunt - the plastic bracket broke & I had to repair it with 4200.

Other than that the whole thing went pretty smoothly.
