I replaced my Johnson impeller before winterizing the engine, but the engine overheated before I could get the antifreeze in.

Turns out the impeller flanges were directed the wrong way, per the instructions! When I reversed the flanges, the engine ran fine and took the antifreeze. What's with that?

The manual writers are not mechanics

I've seen this on a few manual diagrams. The diagram looks right but it is not once you connect the parts or wires. It pays to keep a hand drawn diagram if for no other reason than replacing it at sea after all the vanes are gone and you don't have anything to look at to help figure out which way they go.

Its same for my Johnson pump on my 2GM20F. The arrow indicates one way but the Yanmar engine turns it another. Just follow the direction of the water pump belt/crank shaft turning.
