Wrong filter?

I have a Hunter 28.5 (1987) with a Yanmar 2GM20F diesel engine. I changed all of the fuel filters recently, the one on the engine itself and the filter/water separator that is in the line after the fuel tank and before the engine. It's located behind the engine, next to the stuffing box on my boat. The filter is a FRAM FBM 1110-PBM which you can see in the attached photo. This morning while drinking some coffee and looking at a West Marine catalog I noticed that this type of filter is indicated to be a "Gasoline Filter/Water Separator" rather than a diesel filter like a Racor. I bought my boat, used of course, about four years ago and never had any problems with water or particles gumming up the engine, that I know of but have I just been lucky and/or am I running with the wrong filter? Seems to me that there may be a differance between a gasoline vs. diesel filter. Should I change to a Racor or dosen't it matter. What do you have on your Yanmar 2GM20F? A Fram like mine or something else?

OEM Fuel Filter

Your photo looks like the original equipment fuel filter on my 1986 28.5. I don't recall if it had a filter element expressly for diesel. I changed mine out several years ago to a Raycor 220 type with see thru bowl so I could see dirt and or water and the built in priming pump made filter bleeding much easier. The one issue with the 28.5's and possibly other Hunters was that the deck mounted fuel fill is near enough to the rail that rain water constantly flows over the filler cap. I had a problem with water getting into the fuel tank past the rubber 'O' ring if it was old or just not closed tightly enough. A new cap and 'O' ring are good insurance as is the larger capacity Raycor fuel filter.

Fuel Filter

I have the same FRAM FBM 1110-PBM filter on my 1986 Hunter 28.5 Seems to work just fine, but as Stu notes, it doesn't have any kind of see-thru bowl to determine if any water is getting into your fuel system. So far, I've had no problems with this filter. This filter, however, has been made obsolete by FRAM and replaced by FBM110PLM. The replacement filter cartridge is C110PL. I also agree that it's a good idea to keep an eye on the fuel fill and its "O" ring.
