And if English was phonetically consistent there would be a lot fewer learning disabled students in the country.
In the 60s in California some schools taught reading with a phonetic alphabet. My brother was taught this way in the first and second grade. Consequently, his reading comprehension in regular English orthography was set back by a couple of years.
