Would this work?

I have an opportunity to buy a roller furling jib that was made for a C34. I have a C36, also with roller furling. I assume this means the sail would not go all the way up to the top of the mast. Is there any reason that this would not work?

It Should Work Fine

The 36 has only slightly longer luff, and "J" measurements (less that 12 inches). You might want a pendant at the tack to get the head of the sail higher. If the sail is a 150 on the C34, it will equal a 141 on the C36 (approximately).

Assume you are

talking about buying a headsail, not the furling hardware. If so, the C34 furling headsail should work on your C36, assuming the luff tape is the right size for your furler. As you indicated, the luff will be somewhat shorter than your current system can accommodate so that (1) you will lose some potential sail area and performance*; and (2) you may need to use a pendant at the head of the sail in order to avoid the potential for halyard wrap. *Depending on the overall square footage of the sail and its other dimensions, that is, it may have a longer foot than your current sails, performance may not be negatively impacted and could possibly be improved, although this is unlikely.

thanks

Thanks. As for losing performance: I presently have a 130-135% jib. This is too big for the SF Bay area in the summer (usually) and I find that sailing with this partly furled does not work too well; I can't point well at all. I was thinking of getting a 100% jib. I think this would be about a 90%, so close enough.

Pendant very important

As others have mentioned, the pendant is going to be important to get your halyard up high enough to prevent wrap. My pendant is only 18 inches but without it my halyard wraps almost every time.

It should work fine, but keep in mind.......

what year are the respective boats? The difference in "I" measurement can be up to 2.75 ft. (tall rig, standard rig, wing keel, etc..) The "j" measurements are pretty close, within a foot of each other for the various models of 34 and 36. Give me a call if you need the rig dimensions.
