I am considering purchase of a Sailrite LSZ-1 Sewing Machine. Of course, would like to purchase for lowest cost. Direct from Sailrite (via Amazon) is $899 plus $45 shipping. Other vendors considered include;

1.) Sewing Machines Plus, etc. (via Amazon) @ $869 includes shipping;
2.) Zamirsew (via eBay) @ $774 includes shipping.

Any thoughts/comment would be appreciated. thanks

P.S. I have also posted this topic on Sailnet.

It's worth it to buy direct from Sailrite. Matt Grant comes with the sale.

Thanks, Sam.... Have to ask; who is Matt Grant? I presume Sailrite Rep? A number of outlets claim to ship diretly from Sailrite, but offer the LSZ-1 at a lower price. They claim warranty and service will be performed by Sailrite regardless of where purchased. Wondering if other buyers of the LSZ-1 have experienced? thanks again

I have had that model for 6 years, and it is great. Sailrite has a store here in Annapolis, so I've met Matt and Jim Grant. I've been in the store and overheard the help offered to customers about their machines and sewing projects in general. There is a great forum on the Sailrite site.

Singer 4423

Also, check out the Singer 4423. I bought one on ebay new for $200 from a Singer dealer. It is impressive and light weight. I was able to sew through eight layers of Sunbrella with no hesitation. Also, repaired the handle on a piece of luggage. I was able to talk with the dealer for advice.

I'd second the suggestion to buy direct from Sailrite. Then you will know for sure there is no questions about getting help.

If you don't buy from them I would at least call Sailrite and tell then that there is a dealer selling their machines and that he said that Sailrite would honor the warranty and help with any problems. If it is true then what do you have to loose? Might be better to find the answer to that now than later.

Here is a mod....

...that I did to ours that really improved the control.

We love the machine and Ruth has made a lot of projects with it and some with the Singer we had bought....

Matt Grant, son of Jim Grant IS Sailrite. The sewing machines are his. You got a question, he got the answer. Checking with them about other sellers is a good idea.

lets see, made a new dodger, bimini, sailcover for the main, storm jib, storm trysail, suncover for the 130 headsail, suncover for the 110 headsail, built a new 130 headsail, cruising spinnaker, lugsail for the dinghy. I'd say I paid for the machine about 20 times by now.
What I found was a great savings was taking the old rotted out dodger, ripping apart the seams then using each piece as a pattern to cut out new pieces. Once reassembled it was exactly like the old dodger but new, and the cost was some thread, seamstick and sunbrella cloth. This one project more than paid for the machine. Plus as the window material rots in the sun and fades and cracks it is easy to replacer windows and zippers, each repair would cost a fortune and take forever and aggravate me. So even for these repairs it is good to have the machine. I highly recommend every boat owner have one!!!
