Worton Creek Anchorage

Good anchorage but can be exposed in NW winds.
Good anchoring in sand bottom on the north shore near Red #2. VERY popular anchorage and can have over 50 boats anchored on a 'busy' weekend night. Some small submerged boulders under the exposed sand cliffs, otherwise bottom is SAND that will hold just about any anchor chosen.
So-So anchoring on the south shore of the 'entrance' near and west of R-2, but the bottom is 'cobbles' (river jacks) mixed with sand, the water is shallower ... some small boulders as you go further out into the bay at Handy's Point.
If bad weather go past R2. G3, G5, turn to stbd. and go past 2 marinas and anchor along the west side of the creek near the treeline in 5-6ft. of water ... gets buggy when there is no wind. Wave as you pass by.
On the 'outside' of Worton Creek there is a large 'bight' on the north shore, just east of Worton Point ... good anchoring when its hot and no wind but is exposed to the S through NW. The 'crowd' usually anchors further in.
Belly Button Beach ... just south of Worton Creek entrance (Handys Point) -- in a large bight ON the Bay. Exposed as it IS the bay ... but quiet at night in little to no wind.
Beware - MD water nazi's like to hide in mouth of Tims Creek (tributary of Worton Cr.) waiting to pounce on unsuspecting dinghies (preferred prey species) and powerboats for 'safety infractions'. The latest and most popular 'revenue trick' is 'you MUST have a whistle firmly attached to your PFD ... or ticket'. Other inane and little known MD boat laws also enforced occasionally. Legal THUGS ... 'VERY' nasty!

Speaking of thugs...here's a picture taken last year just before entering the canal from the Chesapeake...
Yikes, I haven't been in Worton Creek for over 15 years -- but just as Rich states, I got pulled over then when I was rowing my dinghy ashore for ice. No mention of whistles at that time, but they would not accept a float cushion as a legal floatation device.... In all my years of gunkholing on the Bay, I have never seen this kind of thing in other places. I'd go to Still Pond unless I needed fuel/food/ice, etc.
I must sail in a different world. We were out for ten days in May and saw one DNR patrol the entire time and that was at Rock Hall. They came into the anchorage slowed down to minimize their wake went past the three boats at anchor and left. When we left an hour later they were tied to a breakwater taking a break. We waved as we went by and they waved back.

Thanks for the heads up on the "revenuers" in Worton Creek. We have yet to make our annual trek there but I'll now know to have my whistle attached to my PFD instead of around my neck.
The only time we've seen DNR or other law enforcers up in the North East is for the fireworks next month. Otherwise the go-fast boats run wild and loud each weekend and not a blue flashing light to be found!
