My only headsail is a Genoa (25' luff x 10'6" foot). It's great for my local conditions; but, for windy days it's too much sail. I'm looking for a smaller headsail for a trip on Lake Michigan. What is a good size for a working jib for this boat. Is it OK to use a headsail shorter that the forestay? New to sailing, Thanx.

Lake Michigan next week

Hi Byron, I don't have an answer to your question but I'm heading to Lake Michigan over the 4th of July week from Indy. When we feel there is too much wind for our 98 Hunter 240 we reduce sail area. We have the standard 110% jib/genoa on our boat. We can easily reef the main. If there is still too much wind we can then completely remove the jib and sail with the main alone (unreefed or reefed). When is your Lake Michigan trip? We're planning a one way trip (father in law is driving the truck and empty trailer north for pickup)starting in St. Joseph and hopping to South Haven, Saugutuck, Grand Haven and then Muskegon. I'm listed in the owners directory if you want to send an offsite email.
