Iron Keels- Rust Never Sleeps!

The keel came from the factory with a coating that is 1/8 to 1/4 thick that needs to be removed because it is rusty underneath. I used a hammer and chistle to remove it. The only correct way to delay rust is to sand blast the iron and coat it with epoxy within one hour. All the magic chemicals and converters help but you'll see rust back in a year or two. I tried Pedit Rustlok, Rust Converters, and VC Tar after grinding all the rust off and the keel was orange in a year or two in fresh water. Do it right or just paint over the rust every year

Interlux has a process.

Jimmy: Interlux has a system for cleaning, preparing & sealing your cast iron keel. The real key is to get the iron shiny bright and seal it!

What happens if...

I hate the looks of the rust on my 1990 H33.5. *grr Every year I wire brush it down and paint. My question is, what is going to happen down the line by not fixing it the correct way as Daryl says?

Hey Phil!

How about forming a directory of rust-keel owners who want to change to lead keels? We could present a company like Mars a much bigger base to offset the cost of the 'real cure'; lead. This is a great site to do so. Anybody else?

Keel-joint rust

I had a long streak of rust originating at the keel joint, in the bilge area both aft and forward of the bilge. It looked much like the one forward in your photo (at least as it appears). I drilled into there and found a large void between the keel and the hull. Water came out of that void when I drilled into it, right at the rust spot. I cut away the whole area and filled it with solid epoxy. If in fact yours is coming from the same place, feel free to email me. I'm currently underway so use this email address: wiltjerpottery@yahoo.com Rusty Wiltjer S/V EarthSpinner Hunter 34

Hey Ken

Where in rochester are you? I go to RIT, and I had my H23 in braddocks bay this last summer. I'm on RIT's sailing team, too! (side note: braddocks bay got really shallow by mid-august. I had to dump all my tanks and push my boat across the shoal into the lake to get to a ramp on the genesee!!
