Clever fix. I am not sure my skills are up to it, but it sounds like a good excuse to buy some new tools and learn. I do appreciate this board. How about some more opinion. How does polysulfide bond to wood and plexi glass. I am considering using black PS as a gasket for the top. I also will be replacing the gasket that seals the hatch to the deck opening. What would be a good bonding agent for that gasket to the wood frame of the hatch?

Higgs if you are using real varnish and not polyurethane then

you can use shellac as a primer and varnish over that. Shellac sticks to every thing but silicones. Edit to add: another reinforcement that I have used involves routing a channel circumferentially on the edge of the frame and winding fiber glass strand into the channel, filling with resin and inserting a wooden spline. When everything has cured you can plane/sand the repair fair and it won't show.
