Greetings, What is the wisdom regarding a passage from Woods Hole to Newport? We are delivering our new-to-us 36-footer and just wanna get there (We have all summer to play on the boat!). The current strategy has us motor sailing from Woods Hole to Newport in a day and then Newport to Mystic in another. Is this too ambitious? What about the off-season conditions at Newport? Other concerns? Thanks in advance! Richard s/v "Indigo"

good plan

Richard What you plan is sound. About the only consideration you may have is the tides around WH but if you are going to motor, no real concern. Shound be a couple of 6-8 hr trips. Have fun Don

I second the good plan

Just be cautious and wait for slack tide in Woods Hole before you pass through. Either direction can be tricky. Plan your passage in the early part of the day. The prevailing afternoon wind will be right on your nose. You may also go down Vineyard Sound, but the best bet it to ride the tide down the Sound. You should make Newport in 6-8 hours. Newport to Mystic is about 6 hours. If you find the last leg into Newport is difficult, then try to anchor at Third Beach in Middletown. That is along the west side of the Sakonnet River and can be quite peaceful. Tuck up into the SW corner near Sachuest Point. Rollers sometimes like to sneak in around the point and can make for a rolly night along the beach in the open anchorage. This will shorten your leg by 1 hour but add an hour to your second day.

We keep our 356 in Noank at Spicers. We made the trip from Plymouth Mass through the cape cod canal and onto Noank in 3 very easy days. First day was Plymouth through the canal to Onset at the mouth of the Canal. Second day it took us about 7 hours to sail down Buzzards Bay and on into Newport. We were sailing close hauled and did some motor sailing in about 10 knots of wind. Waves were 2 to 3 feet with some light swells. The third day it took about 7 hours to sail from Newport into Fishers Island Sound via the Watch Hill Passage and on into Noank. You need to be a little careful for large vessels in the shipping lanes off of Naragansett but the trip was great and relatively easy.
