wooden side rails around cockpit leak

I just bought a 1965 Bristol 27. I am not real familiar with the Bristol 27's The boat has wooden rails around the cockpit thatleaks. When I say leak I mean when a wave comes up water seeps into the cockpit. I haven't seen other Bristol 27 models but it seems something should be between the wood and the fiberglass to keep water from coming in the cock pit. The fellow that had the boat last took the rails off and re-varnished them. I forgot to ask him if they leaked before he took them off. It is a nice boat but needs a lot of TLC.If someone knows I would appreciate the info.

What does it harm when it leaks?

They may just keep the things you want, in the boat.

3M 4200 caulk

makes a pretty good bedding compound for any deck mounted fittings and moldings.

Wet backside

The way the rails are now you a wet butt when the waves get high. I think I will try the silicone.
