Wooden blocks for my Keel

Dear Fellow Sailors:

I need significant sized blocks to raise my new boat in the air as my current boat stands are too large. My previous boat is smaller however I’m going from a fin keel to a shoal draft Keel and though the freeboard on the boat is larger the keel to hull is shorter. Any suggestions on where to purchase very large wooden blocks. Lowe’s does not have anything that would work.

Thanks,
Mark

Talk to a local landscaper, they should have a source on the South Shore for 8x8 timber. You’ll need a chain saw to cut them into blocks. Cape Cod Lumber in Abington may carry them.

How high do you need them to be?

Make your own use standard construction lumber and laminate sections until you get the right size.

Or look for a local saw mill and have them cut a few for you.

Could 4 X 4 or 6 X 6 blocking be stacked in a log cabin style to attain the height you want? As Sailor Sue suggested put flat 2 X ??? on the stack to contact the length of the keel. I do not think going more than two pieces of blocking is a good idea. It might be wiser to sell or trade your stands to get a more appropriate size. Check local boat yards and marinas.
