I need to refinish my exterior wood. It has turned quite gray in color and I would like to refinish to original state. It is essentially bare wood now with little or no finish. I am planning on removing it and refinishing off the boat. Any suggestions? It is a 1986 27 Ft. O'Day. Thanks, Jerry

Many options and opinions

Hi Jerry - You're lucky most or all of the finish is gone. You'll need to sand grey away and go from there. The most popular options or traditional varnish and Cetol. There are many others, like Honet Teak, Bristol Finish, Seafin Teak Oil, etc. I think it's safe to say varnish looks the best but requires the most initial work and ongoing maintenance. I've been somewhat happy with Cetol (looks 80% as good for 20% as much work in my opinion). It has an orangish hue to it that some people find objectionable, but you can get Light and cover with Gloss for a better look. Much more forgiving than varnish. Just a few thoughts. Trevor

What Was I Thinking All Those Years

;D I used varnish for several years before someone turned me on to cetol. It works great! If you get a scratch on the finish just touch it up and it looks like new. Mine has been on in New Jersey for two years and it looks like new. It's the only way to go with outside teak unless you have extra hours to kill varnishing instead of sailing.
