Just purchased this Hunter 30 a month ago and noticed that part of a wooden floor board near the stbd aft corner of the nav station has experienced some normal wear and tear and is beginning to shred and rip off. Wondering if anyone has any experience or advice on a way to fix such a small area of damage without replacing the entire board?

the solution is problematical. you need a veneer to glue to the board. It will be pretty apparent that the new veneer is new. looking at t he board I'd say it needs pulled and given a good looking over before you went an repaired a bad board.
Both boards look suspect with the peeling veneer and dark areas. Dark areas are a sure sign that the board has been wet for some period of time.
Do the smart thing and pull the boards, make sure they are sound before you put good money into a bad board.

That is so common on used boats. If you want a prestine soul you would have to replace the entire soul. Hunter now uses a synthetic which I think is wonderful. I admire the look of Teak and Holly but have spent way to much time trying to patch up the verneer souls.

To migate damage glue down the lifiting verneer with exterior wood glue.

Just noticed you are from NOLA, Happy Katrina Day BTW. What marina are you in? I am in Orleans.

Me, too, Alan. I would suggest if he wants that pristine soul he get Minwax. :)

I am with Jim on this one.. no way it is going to look pristine without new boards.. but.. waterproof glue.. cover the area with heavy wax paper (floor protection paper from Home Depot or equivalent).. roll heavily to get things back where they belong.. then weigh down with bricks or equivalent to hold together until the glue sets. If you don't like, then you can cover with something like this :

dunno, Jim.. I think one should always start with a pristine soul before doing varnish on the sole.. the magic incantations often used with varnish may dent that pristine one..??

Good suggestions, not ready to redo the whole thing but want to prevent more damage so we will try the glue for now.

We are in South Shore on pier 5. I've notice a few other SBO users in NOLA, we should all meet up sometime. Happy kday to you too, unreal that it has been 8 years.

I'll work on my soul but I generally just soak it in whisky.

I looked at several boats a South Shore, a Watkins center cockpit, couple of Trawlers an older Hunter. The Hunter may have been on 5. Our original plan was to keep the boat at SS but this 33 came up with an Orleans slip. Nine minutes from work to boat, 20 from the house. I was at Municipal for 20 years, but nothing has improved since the cleanup.

We will have to try a get together in the near future.

This is a great article for refinishing beat up teak and holly sole. Mine was delaminated due to a leak around then compression post. Followed the directions in the article.I used a quart of epoxy from the hardware store then used interlux schooner gold as the finish...looking great so far. Will finish up rest this fall.
