Wood cutout for glasses in the galley

Hi ~We have been remodeling our '84 H31 and I don't like the glass holder slots above the sink and ice chest. Has anyone taken that off or done any alterations to it? Is it a structual piece that should not be disturbed? Any sugggestions or input would be appreciated! We are stripping the gloss wood and before I try to strip that piece I would like to know my options.Thanks and Happy Sailing!Marci and Michael

Microwave is in our "glass slots"

The previous owner cut out the area above the ice chest in our boat and mounted the microwave in there. The wood cut outs seem to be just that...cutouts. I don't believe they provide any structual support. I like the microwave being there, it's very convient and there is still a place underneath where I store the dinner plates and a serving platter. I'm sorry I don't have a picture but will take one the next time we go to the boat for ya.
