Wood block under mast plate on H23

I am looking to buy my first sail boat and found an H23 for a great price. My question is that someone has put a wooden block under the mast plate for some reason. Is this a problem? The current owner says that he thinks it was put there to allow the hatch to fully open (so the hatch won't hit the boom). Also, inside the cabin on each side there are cables that attach to the side stays of the mast. Is this original on a 1985 H23? I have never seen support cables on the inside of a boat. Thanks for the help!

I have a 89h23, there is no cable inside of my cabin, have been in several other different years, and I have never seen this , are you saying that the cables inside of the cabin are a continuation of your shrouds, ?/ cant answer about the block of wood under the mast step, is it possible that there is weakness in the cabintop and these two things were done with the thought that they would take stress off of the cabintop?Ie running shrouds below instead of to chainplates on deck ? scares me, , might want some one to look at it as in a surveyor> it might not be sure a good price. god luck , 23s are good boats in general, good luck Mike B

Continuation of shrouds inside cabin

Mike: Yep. It appears that these lines run inside the cabin are a continuation of the shroud lines. I had the same thought as you. Maybe the previous owner had a problem and added this reinforcement to the boat. I had never seen this on any other boat.

interior shrouds ,

Well , Like I said it scares me, I would really talk to someone to get an explanation, it could be the deck has weakened due to rot, the core is balsa and if water gets in there you can have huge problems, , If it were me I would keep looking, again good Luck Mike B

Shrouds

Some of the early boats had a Pad Eye on deck and one below the deck. It was one of the first ways that they did the boats. On a early boat I saw it had a Pad eye on the deck and one below inside the boat with a turn buckle below deck also. It was one of the ways they did it but changed to what we have now. This boat also had the wing/swing keel but was changed to the wing Keel.

check with dan

As Cliff said, some of the earlier 23's had a turnbuckle arrangement in the cabin instead of chainplates. It's very structurally sound. Dan Ulrich's boat is one of these and he's researched it thoroughly. Email him at danulrich@att.net Can't speak to the wood block........that's curious. How thick is it? Does is replace the cast mast step? Can you post a pic of it?

Thanks

Thanks for the info. I emailed Dan and yes those shroud lines in the cabin are OEM. No one is sure about this wood block thing though. It is about 6" square and about an inch thick.

Wooden Tabernacles and Steel Rods

Les: Just purchased a 1985 H23. It too has a wooden block at the mast step. I also noted steel rods reinforcing the chain plates inside the cabin. They look factory installed but I have not seen them on early or later production year H23's. How about anyone else? - Kevin.

Kevin:

Did you happen to buy your boat off of a fellow near Alum Creek, north of Columbus? I have a feeling we are talking about the same boat! I decided on another H23 and I will be picking it up this weekend. Les

Les: H23 near Alum Creek

Les: Was the Hunter you were looking at on Curve Road. If so, it was the same one. - Kevin.

Mike: Wooden Tabernacle

Mike: I'll post a picture of the wooden tabernacle. The cast maststep is set on top of it. - Kevin.
