The wood below the jib winches on my C22 (1974) needs some love. Is it easy to remove the winch and the wood, or should I stain it on the boat? It's out of the water (but I want to put it in ASAP!). Pic attached. Thanks in advance. -A

If it is easy to remove I always perfer to

remove wood I'm going to varnish. It generally come out nicer with crisp lines between the wood and fiberglass.

Don't even think about it!

If you leave it on the boat when you stain the wood, the fiberglass gelcoat will get some stain too! Even if you mask it off. It's inevitable according to the Murphy's law principle.
