I have a 2001 450 that has had no mechanical problems since delivery this year. Today, (while still in the slip), the engine quit running after about 4 minutes of running time and refused to restart. When I pulled off injector, fuel in the top of the injector appeared to be white. I could not get fuel to the injector from the final filter. I have 3/4 tank of fuel and had pre-lubed engine with water intake valve closed prior to starting. I am sure this is an air problem, but with 25 hours of running time this one stumps me.

I'm no marine diesel expert but...

..it sounds like you may have water in the fuel. Here are two ways it can get there: a) The water separator in the fuel line is full. Drain it and bleed the fuel system. It might not be a bad idea to change the fuel filters while you're at it. b) The head gasket may be blown. Drain some of the lube oil from the sump. If the oil looks cloudy it probably has water in it too, and that's a pretty good sign of a blown head gasket. In either case, don't try to restart the engine until you have diagnosed the problem. It could make a small problem much worse. Good luck. Peter H23 "Raven"

One more thing...

This is a long shot, but since the boat and engine are new, the head bolts may have worked loose a bit, allowing water into the cylinder. After checking the water separator, I'd call the dealer. Messing with the engine yourself (apart from routine maintenance) may void your warranty. Again, I hope it's nothing serious. Peter H23 "Raven"

Still under warranty?

Michael: Is it still under warranty? Peter may be on to something here. Regardless if it is or not. If there IS water in the fuel, this can be disastourous to the injectors. When water gets into the compression chamber on a diesel it can blow the tips of the injectors apart (so I've been told). I would direct this problem to a Yanmar mechanic or the dealer. May be an easy fix or not, but not worth being out of commission for the better part of them summer.

I had water in fuel at delivery

Upon delivery of my 40.5, I had a great deal of water in the fuel. Probably 1-2 quarts total. The first symptom was rough running and the dealer's mechanic found the water separator full of water as well as the engine-mounted filter. It took the best part of the summer for me to purge all of the water out of the system. I accumulated about 1 ounce of water per hour of running the engine. Also there was a great deal of white smoke at startup that I later attributed to the abnormal amount of water present. My first step would be to my dealer for help.

2001 H450 that won't run. This is a dealer...

problem or maunfacturer requested repair. Don't do something that could void your warranty or destroy the trail a good mechanic needs to find and effect a permanent repair. Ray
