Wobbly wheel.

Hey all, Ive noticed on my 97 Oceanus 400 that the wheel is quite "wobbly". Removing the wheel I find a split bronze bushing around the shaft held very loosely inside an aluminum collar that also holds the tightening screw (the screw is gone and the plunger corroded in place). Examining the collar bore there is some corrosion and loss of material but only a very minor amount and nothing above the bushing - the bronze bushing doesn't look like it ever fit tightly, and it's outer surface is uncorroded. There's at least an 1/8" gap around it. I was thinking of replacing the aluminum collar but it doesn't appear that the collar ever fit tightly around the bushing. Is it possible that these boats just have a bit of a wobble on their wheels?

Its corroded, but that's not the reason for the large gap.

As you can see that bushing has tons of space around it.

It seems to me that someone replaced the bushing with a wrong one.

I suppose its possible with POs; you never know what they're capable of. Funny how everything else is correct though, the notch for the wheel screw, the notch for the locator wedge. Just much too small O.D. Makes me wonder if there wasnt originally a nylon insert or something between the bushing and the collar.
At any rate I decided to pour epoxy into that space to fill it and hold the bushing firmly. If that doesnt work I'll get a new collar 3D printed with a smaller inner dimension.

Who made the pedestal? Our 2014 has a Lewmar pedestal that has just recently started wobbling just a little up and down - maybe 1/16" movement at the outer diameter of the wheel. But it's stable left to right, so not really the way it would look if the bushing were like yours.

I think Beneteau did. Its not really a separate pedestal but part of the cockpit furniture: two tables and icebox, with the instruments and wheel at the aft end.

Beneteau may make the plastic surround housing your gauges, MFD, and switches but the mechanical steerage hardware was likely purchased from another company.

Examine the metal parts of the system for a manufacture’s name plate. Perhaps on the quadrant or the wheel.
