Wish I had tried this before!

I trailer every time I go boating which means constantly setting up and taking down the mast. I generated my share of mistakes in the early days. While I consider my routine fairly "well-oiled" now, a lapse of concentration on Saturday left me holding the boom vang strap after the mast was raised. For those who may not understand, the vang strap for the 240 is a "U" shaped fitting that is held in place by the mast step pin. Standard procedure has always been to pin the mast in the step, insert the vang strap, then raise the mast. I really didn't want to lower the mast just to install the strap and was thinking of a way to jury rig the vang. I touched the mast pin and was totally surprised that it moved and was not solidly wedged in place. Apparently, I had never checked it before. I was able to easily remove the pin with the mast up and insert the vang strap. What a nice surprise! Mark Kissel Kittiwake/98H240

Did the same thing, however---

Mark hope you are having as good a season as we are up here. As for the vang thing, I too have forgot to put in while stepping the mast, but found it too tight to remove, so lowered mast ugh! Next time I step the mast I am going to try it again to see if it just me.
